Aquarium test kits

Posted on: August 20, 2011

Aquarium kits possess an important application space in an aquarium. It is extremely necessary in order to keep certain chemical parameters of water in the aquarium under a close check. It is essential for maintaining pH, alkalinity, nitrates, phosphates, magnesium, organics, oxygen, ozone and several other components. Often due to increase in the percentage of the above components in the water an aquatic imbalance state is reached which is fatal for the survival of aquatic animals and plants. A periodic test of aquarium helps to keep those variables within limit and thus achieve the desired balance state. To determine the state of the parameters in an aquarium individually tests are done and in this respect the aquarium test kits made by different manufacturers play an important role. The test kits check the present status and accordingly give an indication over the parameters which need to be controlled.

Alkalinity test Kit: Alkalinity is a measure of the concentration of negatively charged ions present in the aquarium water such as carbonates, bi carbonates, borates and certain hydroxides. The level of concentration of these ionic compounds decides the capacity of the water to retain its normal pH level. It is extremely crucial in the sense that if the concentration of carbonate ions is below the normal level then it will reduce the pH of water at such an alarming rate that it will trigger a critical state which is equally threatening for the survival of plants, fish and certain invertebrates. Generally one should follow the normal levels of alkalinity in a tank which is ideally 7-10 for sea water aquarium, 3-7 for fresh water aquarium and soon. Thus it is always advisory to maintain the optimum KH level in the aquarium for supporting life in it.

Ammonia Test Kit: It is a deadly compound of inorganic nitrogen generally found in the tanks used for storing aquatics. The principal source being solid waste or remains of fish and certain invertebrates, food that is uneaten and remains of plants etc. In this respect the nitrosomonas bacteria come in the rescue of the lethal cause as these bacteria eat ammonia and relieve hydrogen molecules out of water. Again the life cycle of such bacteria may be endangered by certain biochemical reactions which must be taken care of by experts.

Calcium Test Kit: Calcium is essential in a aquarium as it supports the grooming of corals, algae and other microorganisms within it. Thus without it such organisms will just perish away. It is for its enormous importance it is essential to maintain certain levels within the tank which is ideally should be 450mg/Lt for sea water aquariums, 100 mg/Lt for planned freshwater aquariums respectively.

General Hardness Test Kit: Hardness of water is decided by the presence of calcium and magnesium ions in it. If the amount of salts is found high in the water then it is termed as hard water and otherwise termed as Soft water. Generally for optimal conditions the hardness of water should be within 4-10 German degrees approximately.

pH Test Kit: pH is a measure of acidity and alkalinity of a solution. Ideally for acidic solutions the pH value stays below 7 and above 7 for alkaline solutions. For a neutral solution the pH must be within 6.2-7.2 which is considered to be ideal for natural water. For marine water aquariums it is regulated between 8.1-8.4 and soon.
